Buffalo

The buffalo (Bison bison) came to North America long ago from Asia, crossing a land bridge that once connected Siberia to Alaska. The early bison were enormous animals, weighing up to 5,000 pounds with horns that spanned more than six feet across. As time went on the North American bison became smaller. Today a bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and they can be more than twelve feet long. The bison population was just about destroyed in the late 1800s by a government-sanctioned campaign of extermination but thanks to private efforts the animal was saved from extinction. There are approximately 350,000 bison in North America today. |
