The
Epiphyllum (Cactaceae) is called by many names. This one is an
epiphyllum hookeri. It is named after the botanist,
Sir William Hooker, who first recorded it. The species name phyllanthus
comes from the Greek "flowered leaf" referring to the fact
that the flower originates from the middle of a leaf shaped stem. It
is also often called a night blooming cactus, or a night blooming orchid.
It is a rare occasion to see it in bloom because it blooms only at night
and the blooms last for just a few hours. The epiphyllum hookeri is
known as a desert plant but can be grown anywhere in the United States
as long as
it is not
exposed to frost. It is often grown as an indoor plant in colder climates.
