The Monarch (Danaus plexippus) is perhaps the flagship butterfly for the United States. Its central US migration from Mexico to southern Canada is well known as well as it's over wintering areas in south central Mexico. The migration
behavior along the western U.S. is different where adults spend their winters along the more temperate climate of California. San Diego is home to a number of wintering populations. Places such as the Bird and Butterfly Garden within the Tijuana River Valley County Park are a good place to watch these beautiful creatures.--------------------------------- Michael Klein
