California Gulls (Larus californicus) are abundant along the Pacific coast and the Salton Sea during the winter. They can be found further inland in breeding season, nesting in large colonies on the prairies. It takes almost four years for these birds to reach maturity. The California Gull catches fish, but also eats insect larvae, grasshoppers and small rodents, which makes it popular with farmers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sandy Thomas
