The Old Point Loma Lighthouse was lit for the first time on November 15, 1855. Standing 422 feet above sea level, fog and low clouds often obscured the light, so after 36 years, on March 23, 1891 the lighthouse was closed and a new lighthouse closer to the water at the tip of the Point was opened. The old lighthouse is now a museum, refurbished to look as it did in the late 1800's.
In this picture you will see plants, birds and animals that are common to the lighthouse habitat.
There is a California Encelia (Encilia californica) also known as a bush sunflower, the California Quail (Callipepla californica) that prefers living in woodlands and bushy foothills and the California Towhee (Pipilo crissalis), a large sparrow, can be seen running along on the ground, where it blends in perfectly because it's just plain brown, with no outstanding markings. You will also find a Western Fence Lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis), found in a variety of habitats and the most visible is the California Gull
(Larus californicus) that is abundant along the Pacific coast.
